See moreβRwanda has rebuilt itself into East Africa's most polished short-trip destination: mountain gorillas in the Virunga volcanoes, chimpanzees in Nyungwe, a restocked Big Five park in Akagera, and one of the cleanest, safest capitals on the continent. Volcanoes National Park is the draw. Habituated mountain gorilla families live on the forested slopes of the Virunga chain, an hour or two of steep walking from the park boundary and about two and a half hours' drive from Kigali β which makes a three-night gorilla trip genuinely feasible. Nyungwe Forest in the southwest holds chimpanzees and a canopy walkway, and Akagera in the east has been rehabilitated to the point where lion and rhino have both returned. The country is small β you can cross it in a day β so itineraries are compact and drive times are short by regional standards. Kigali itself, with the Genocide Memorial and a strong coffee and design scene, is worth a full day rather than a transit stop.
June to September and late December to February β the dry seasons, and the best trekking conditions. Rwanda's two dry seasons give the firmest trails and the clearest volcano views. The long dry season, June to September, is the peak window and the one that books out first; the short dry season from late December to February is nearly as good and slightly quieter. The rains fall March to May and again in November. Gorilla trekking still runs β the forest is wet at the best of times β but the climbs are slippery and can take considerably longer. The compensation is real: fewer visitors, greener forest, better photography light, and lodge rates that drop noticeably. As in Uganda, the permit dictates the calendar rather than the other way round. Rwanda caps trekking permits and prices them at USD 1,500 per person, fixed by the government, and dry-season slots go months ahead. Secure the permit, then book flights.
Rwanda is one of the easiest countries in Africa to enter. Since 2023 nationals of every country are issued a visa on arrival without any prior application β a 30-day single-entry visitor visa, currently USD 50, payable at the airport. You can also apply in advance through the government's Irembo portal (irembo.gov.rw), which shortens the queue at Kigali and is worth doing if you are arriving late. Nationals of African Union member states, Commonwealth countries and La Francophonie receive a 30-day visa free of charge. The East Africa Tourist Visa, a USD 100 multiple-entry permit covering Rwanda, Kenya and Uganda for 90 days, is the better option for a multi-country trip. A passport valid at least six months beyond arrival is required, along with a return or onward ticket. Note that Rwanda banned single-use plastic bags in 2008 and enforces it at the airport β they will be taken off you at the arrivals hall. Confirm current fees and rules at irembo.gov.rw before travelling.
Yellow fever: a certificate is required if you are arriving from, or have transited through, a country with risk of yellow fever transmission. It is not required for travellers arriving directly from Europe or North America, but it is required if you are coming overland from Uganda, Tanzania or the DRC β a common routing for gorilla itineraries, so check your exact route. Malaria: risk exists across most of the country and prophylaxis is recommended. Kigali and the higher slopes of the Virungas are lower-risk owing to altitude, but Akagera in the low-lying east is not, and most trips pass through both. Commonly recommended: hepatitis A and B, typhoid, tetanus-diphtheria-polio, and rabies for extended rural stays. Gorilla trekking has a hard health rule: anyone showing symptoms of a cold, flu or any respiratory infection will be refused at the briefing and the USD 1,500 permit is not refunded. Masks are mandatory in the presence of the gorillas and a seven-metre minimum distance is enforced. The gorillas share enough of our immunology that a human cold can be fatal to them. Kigali has the best medical facilities in the region, but trekking areas are remote β carry evacuation cover. Drink bottled or treated water. See a travel clinic four to six weeks before departure.
