Rwanda and Uganda both offer permit-based mountain gorilla tracking. Choose between complete itineraries that suit your dates, fitness, available time and wider travel plans. A permit headline alone does not describe the total trip or the effort involved.
Where the tracking takes place
In Rwanda, the main mountain gorilla tracking destination is Volcanoes National Park. In Uganda, compare the proposed tracking sector in Bwindi Impenetrable National Park or Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. Ask which park and sector your permit covers and whether the accommodation and transfers match that starting point.
The gorillas live in forest and mountain habitat. Tracking conditions and the time needed to reach a group vary; an operator cannot promise a particular encounter, easy walk or exact trekking duration.
Compare permits for your actual travel dates
Check Rwanda's applicable rate and conditions through the Rwanda Development Board booking portal. For Uganda, use the Uganda Wildlife Authority rates and notices and ask for written confirmation of the charge for your date, visitor category and tracking experience.
Published tariff documents and promotional notices can have different effective dates. An expired tariff or a future-effective announcement does not establish today's standard rate. A lodge discount does not establish a permit discount. Ask whether the permit is confirmed, what it includes, whether it can be rescheduled and what happens if it cannot be secured.
Plan realistic transfers
Compare the actual arrival airport, road or flight connections, tracking start location and accommodation. Rwanda itineraries often start from Kigali; Uganda itineraries may start from Entebbe or another agreed gateway. The suitability of either route depends on your full trip and booked connections.
Ask for realistic transfer times, road conditions, baggage allowances and an alternative plan for a delayed arrival. Do not assume a same-day international connection and trek will work without confirmation from the operator.
Match the trek to your needs
Discuss the terrain, altitude, expected physical demands and any age or accessibility restrictions before paying. Ask how group allocation works and what assistance, equipment or porter arrangements are available for the specific activity. A shorter road transfer does not make a forest trek easy.
Use a qualified travel-health professional for personal fitness, health, vaccines and malaria-prevention questions. Follow current park instructions on wildlife distance, illness and conduct. Confirm insurance for the activity and emergency arrangements for the exact route.
Compare the total quote
Use the same party size, dates and service level when comparing operators. Record permits, accommodation, meals, road transport, guides, flights, transfers and any required charges as included, excluded or awaiting confirmation. Check single supplements, quote currency and validity, deposit deadlines, cancellation terms and supplier-change conditions.
