African Safari Costs: Compare Quotes, Inclusions and Fees

Ask whether the amount is per person, per room or per group; which currency applies; how many people share a room or vehicle; and which travel period the price covers. Confirm single supplements, child conditions and any minimum party size. Ask how long the quote is valid and what remains subject to availability.

Accommodation category alone does not define the whole price. Transport, transfer distances, domestic flights, private versus shared vehicles, meals and park-related activities can materially change what is supplied. Check the day-by-day route and overnight locations alongside the total.

Use the same checklist for each quote: accommodation, meals, drinking water, road transport, driver-guide, airport transfers, park entry, activity permits, domestic flights, international flights, optional activities, taxes and other required charges. Mark each item as included, excluded or awaiting confirmation.

Do not assume a safari is all-inclusive. Ask the operator to identify any compulsory costs that are paid separately and distinguish them from optional extras. Add any excluded costs to your comparison before deciding which quote offers better value.

Permit rates depend on visitor category, date and experience. Use Uganda Wildlife Authority's rates and notices and Rwanda Development Board's gorilla booking portal for current conditions. UWA's February 2026 notice includes low-season provisions and changes taking effect in January 2027; the applicable travel date matters.

For Kenya, check the relevant Kenya Wildlife Service park page and ask the operator which visitor category and fees apply. Obtain written confirmation of the rate and what it includes before paying. Do not infer a seasonal permit discount from a lodge discount.

Confirm the operator's deposit, balance deadlines, permitted payment methods, cancellation terms and treatment of supplier changes. Read what happens if accommodation, a flight or a permit cannot be confirmed. A cheaper headline price is difficult to assess without those terms.
